Applications are invited for fully funded PhD position (NOT MS) for September 2017 in a collaborative research project with industry at Distributed Parameter Systems Laboratory (DPSLab) in the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering University of Alberta. This project is jointly sponsored by industrial partner and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Requirement (Position 1): To be considered student must demonstrate a knowledge of Finite Element Method. In particular, we require that you know to solve heat and momentum equation on 2 dimensional square domain (we request that you write small computational problem (20 by 20-square grid elements) and solve it and in addition computer code should be attached). The project is on control of material processing and these are required skills.
Requirements (Position 2): We are looking for highly motivated students with stellar academic record and interest in process control. In particular, students from:
We provide highly competitive compensation package.
Student applicants from major Chinese Universities are encourage to contact me early since their immigration paperwork deadlines are earlier than for other students.
The applicants from Iran are encouraged to apply providing that they have at least ~16.5-17.00/20 GPA for their undergraduate studies (not in MS program) or/and that they have already demonstrated research (publication) potential. If they are also SAMPAD students this is additional plus.
An excellent recommendation is to reproduce simulation results from our recent articles.
ABSOLUTELY!!!! DO NOT WRITE LENGTHY LETTERS SAYING:
Having any of the above in your application just demonstrates how far you are from real understanding of graduate program at U of Alberta.
We are looking in demonstration of your excellence (papers, presentations, recommendations and/or your ability to reproduce some of our results).
We accept students who are ready to develop certain skills and we do not hire for the projects but for the skills development.
If you are having MS degree from any of engineering departments you have higher chance to be considered. It is rarely that undergraduate students can match any of our requirements and jump on the board directly from the undergraduate program, unless they started preparing themselves in advanced to transition to graduate studies in our particular field.
On behalf of ISA Edmonton Student Section, we would like to invite you to the inaugural ISA Edmonton Student Competition that will be held on October 16th and 17th 2015 around the NAIT Main Campus, Edmonton, Alberta. It will host students from various schools across Alberta such as the U of A, NAIT, SAIT, U of C etc. It is a perfect opportunity for students to collaborate with their peers, network with industry professionals, explore scenarios and solve problems that are not typically simulated in the school lab environment. Since this event is being held during the NAIT open house, it also gives an opportunity to explore different programs at NAIT.
Each school will send their students along with one instructor / representative to NAIT, Edmonton Alberta. They will be housed for three evenings at Comfort Inn. Breakfast, Lunch and dinner will be provided for the participants and representatives over the course of the three days they are here. We will also provide transit passes to you so that you can travel easily during your stay.
We would also request the participants to bring their cameras for the photo contest that will be held on the first day of the event. All the participants will face similar technical challenges. Training will also be provided on the first day of the event. The challenges will include interpretation and use of electronic, electrical, pneumatic and mechanical schematics. Installing and commissioning electrical, pneumatic and mechanical systems. Configuring, testing and modifying a sequential mechanism controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). As well as programming a PLC.
Participation in this event will not only give you a chance to socialize with other students but also improve your technical skills.
Please let us know by September 25th, 2015 if you will be joining us.
A scholarship is a terrible thing to waste.
Students can't win academic scholarships if they don't apply. ISA Educational Foundation Scholarships are awarded to college or university students who demonstrate outstanding potential in the fields of automation and control. ISA scholarships cover tuition and related expenses as well as research activities and initiatives.
Feel free to download fliers here to distribute at your school or organization.
To guarantee consideration, students are encouraged to complete and submit an application as soon as possible. The deadline for application submission is 15 February 2015.
